The Buick Encore debuted in 2013 as Buick’s answer to a compact SUV crossover and quickly became the company’s top seller in its class. With impressive cargo and passenger spaces, sleek styling, and great road performance, the Encore really delivers the most to drivers who are looking for a little something extra in their compact SUV. In 2018, the Buick Encore is available in six trim options. Each trim offers interior upgrades to seat materials, interior and exterior details, and offers more available technology and safety features. A new exterior color, Copperitino joins the Encore lineup this year as well. Overall, the Buick Encore just keeps improving.
For the 2018 Toyota RAV4, the biggest update in 2018 is the addition of a new trim, the Adventure, which gives the compact crossover SUV a new suspension, tuned to perform better in rough or off-road road conditions, as well as some additional sportier styling features like a higher height and details like black trim around headlamps, trunk outlets for powering up on the go, and a towing package. The RAV4 appeals to the outdoorsy crown as it always has, but aside from the new trim addition, not many changes have been made to the crossover SUV this year.

  • Cargo

The 2018 Buick Encore has generous cargo space and roomy passenger areas and allow for many configurations to accommodate whatever cargo or passenger needs you may have. Legroom and headroom in the Encore are very generous and make riding, even on long trips, very enjoyable for drivers and passengers. The front seats are set high, giving a great point of view of the road ahead. When it’s time to store your carry-on, the Encore gives great options for any type of storage needs with 18.8 cubic ft behind the rear row of seats, and 48.4 cubic feet with the seats folded. The front passenger seat also folds flat for those times when you need to haul something extra long. The Encore doesn’t skimp on small storage either. Drivers will find ample small cargo, gear storage, and organization throughout the 2018 Encore. And with such flexible cargo and passenger spaces, it’s no wonder the 2018 Buick Encore outscores many SUV crossovers in its class when it comes to flexible storage and passenger area capability.

The RAV4 offers a nice amount of trunk space as well as extended storage of up to 73.4 cu ft with the seats folded. Another appealing feature of the 2018 Toyota RAV4 is the rear-hatch sensor technology that lets drivers open the rear hatch, hands-free. Always a nice touch whether you are loading groceries, sports gear, or weekend getaway cargo. The passenger areas in the RAV4 offer a quiet ride, and the suspension is tuned to handle rough terrain quite well. While the RAV4 does have a nice amount or general cargo space and towing capability (with the additional expense of the tow package from the Adventure trim), the lack of small storage and organization inside the RAV4 can disappoint some drivers.

  • Safety

The Buick Encore gets a five-star rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) in 2018. The suite of standard safety equipment onboard the 2018 Buick Encore is impressive. Highlights of included safety features are:

    • Anti-lock brakes paired with traction and stability control technology
    • Full-range of airbags to protect drivers and passengers
    • Rear-view camera to help drivers more safely reverse and park
    • OnStar, including safety response services

    Additional safety features include:

    • Blind Spot monitoring and Rear Cross-Traffic Alert technology
    • Lane Departure and Forward Collision Warning
    • Rear Parking Assist

With all of these standard and available safety features, it’s easy to see why the 2018 Buick Encore gets such high praise in the safety department.

The RAV 4 offers drivers a nice amount of standard and optional safety features including:

    • Auto emergency braking and pedestrian detection technology
    • Adaptive cruise control and automatic high-beams
    • Lane departure alert technology
    • Brake Assist and traction control
    • 4-wheel disc brakes, 4-wheel ABS
    • Full suite of airbags

The RAV4’s safety technology is about on par with the rest of the SUVs in its class. For drivers looking for more safety features, upgraded trim levels offer more available safety tech options.

  • Technology

The technology suite on the 2018 Buick Encore is impressive. Both standard and available tech offers drivers all they need and more in connectivity, navigation, entertainment, and safety. The Encore’s new center console has been made more user-friendly and now features an infotainment system that lets drivers navigate, play music, and check real-time traffic updates. Standard on all Encore trim levels are tech features including, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay compatibility, Onboard 4G LTE Wi-Fi, and an 8-inch full-color control touchscreen.

The RAV4 has a nice amount of available technology for 2018. Bluetooth comes standard on all trim levels of the RAV4 as does a rear-reversing camera, and a 6.1-inch infotainment control center screen. On the downside, the RAV4 does not offer the very popular Apple CarPlay or Android Auto connectivity options on board like most of the other SUV crossovers in its class.

  • Safety

Since it hit the SUV market in 2013, the Buick Encore has always been the epitome of luxury styling in its class. With sleek and sculptural lines and hand-crafted attention to detail, the Encore is a real stunner on the road. This year Buick has added an exterior color option to its already impressive color palette lineup, Coppertino. The design on the Encore features Buick’s now signature winged front grille and LED headlamps. The Encore is available in six trim options; Encore, Preferred, Sport Touring, Preferred II, Essence, Premium. Each trim offers extra styling detail options, such as optional wheels, body-color mirrors, and racks, as well as interior upgrades to seat materials. Drivers can chose from cloth, leatherette, or leather seating. Overall, the 2018 Buick Encore is classically styled and detailed with modern touches that make it one of the most stylish SUVs in its class.

The RAV4 remains an SUV that is marketed towards first-car buyers and those who enjoy the outdoors. This compact crossover is well-built and has nice detailing on the exterior as well as the interior. The biggest style change in 2018 for the RAV4 comes in the form of its new trim, the Adventure. This is a sporty trim, made for those who love to get outside. The Adventure trim has a higher overall height and adds some performance options for off-road conditions. A cold-weather package is also now available on the 2018 RAV4 that gives drivers the option of heated steering wheel and front seats, as well as a windshield wiper de-icer. The RAV4 is available six trims: the LE, XLE, SE, Limited, Platinum, and the Adventure. Each trim brings its own uniques style touches to the RAV4.
