We’re still reeling from the unveiling of the brand-new 2022 GMC HUMMER EV, a truck that is truly the first of its kind. The all-electric supertruck will have the automotive industry abuzz for quite time, and we’re sure to be talking about it for the next several weeks and beyond. Last week we narrowed our focus to look at one specific technology found in the HUMMER EV, Super Cruise. We thought we’d follow suit this week and get into the details of what Watts to Freedom is and what it does.

“Watts to Freedom unlocks the full potential of the propulsion system and puts all of its available power to the pavement. It’s an all-encompassing experience unlike anything else – purpose-built for straight-line fun. It’s an amazing demonstration of just how fast 1,000 horsepower and 11,500 lb-ft. of electric propulsion can move you – regardless of the vehicle’s size. It’ll put a smile on your face every single time.”

– Al Oppenheiser, Chief Engineer, GMC HUMMER EV

What is Watts to Freedom and how does it work?

While a lot of the focus in the GMC HUMMER EV has been on its off-road capabilities, Watts to Freedom is one of the technologies that highlights just how well its performance on actual roads matches those capabilities. Of course, the biggest example of this is its three-motor system that offers 1,000 horsepower alongside an unprecedented 11,500 pound-feet of torque.

The Watts to Freedom technology harnesses the incredible power of the supertruck’s propulsion system into a launch control mode. When you want to use it, you can turn it on and see just how well the vehicle accelerates. To get specific? It can accelerate from 0-60 miles per hour in 3 seconds flat. That’s stunning for most vehicles, but especially for a monster the size of the new HUMMER EV.

Perhaps the most fun part of Watts to Freedom is the feeling of a launch sequence that happens beforehand. Not only does the entire vehicle lower itself two inches in preparation for the launch, but you’ll hear unique sounds and see unique animations on the display audio screen as the vehicle initiates a countdown.
