In or initial look at off-road driving technologies that will be standard in the Edition 1 version of the upcoming 2022 GMC HUMMER EV, we mentioned 4 Wheel Steer but didn’t dive too far into the details as far as what exactly that feature will provide. We thought we’d remedy that today by taking a closer look at 4 Wheel Steer.

“By channeling the best attributes of GM’s electric vehicles and its legacy of truck and performance capability, the HUMMER EV will offer distinctive drive characteristics to tackle all kinds of road and trail conditions. The drive modes optimize performance, enhancing the feeling of ultimate driver control.”

– Al Oppenheiser, Chief Engineer, GMC HUMMER EV

As we mentioned in that initial blog, 4 Wheel Steer is a feature that will provide three different driver-selectable settings: Off, Auto and CrabWalk. Each setting adjusts steering in some manner to provide assistance as you drive, both on and off the road.

Off Setting

In this setting, no rear steering assistance is provided.

Auto Setting

Turning the automatic mode on will make your HUMMER EV’s tires turn in opposite directions. This provides enhanced maneuverability when operating in tight situations at low speeds. If you get up to higher speeds while the auto setting is triggered, the wheels will turn in the same direction as normal.

This incredible new technology is exclusive to the segment, and it enables the rear wheels to turn at the exact same angle as the front wheels – up to a 10-degree turn – when operating at low speeds. This enables the vehicle to move diagonally, greatly enhancing maneuverability when dealing with very tight off-road conditions. It almost makes your HUMMER EV look like a crab, hence the name.
