What are Ultium Batteries and why are they beneficial to the 2022 GMC HUMMER EV?
Earlier this week we looked at the Drive Mode Control feature found in the 2022 GMC HUMMER EV, but today we’re going to look at the Ultium Batteries that we’ve talked about a lot but never gone into detail on. They’re an incredibly important part of the all-electric supertruck, and one that we’re very excited about.

“As the first of GM’s next-gen EVs, the HUMMER EV will fundamentally alter conventional off-road and truck paradigms. It will also debut new technology, including our all-new Ultium batteries, Ultium Drive units and the industry’s first wireless battery management system.”
– Ken Morris, Vice President of Autonomous and Electric Vehicle Programs, General Motors
Why are Ultium Batteries unique?
Ultium batteries are still relatively rare throughout the automotive industry, but they’re unique and will likely be a large part of the future of electrification. What makes them so unique? Their cells not only have a larger format than other types of batteries, but they also adopt a pouch style. This means they can be stacked either vertically or horizontally inside the battery pack, offering more freedom to engineers and potentially freeing up space.
The initial release of the HUMMER EV, the Edition 1 model, will feature a 24-module pack that features two layers of vertical cell modules, which is how the vehicle gets its GM-estimated 350+ miles of driving range and helping it earn those astounding power ratings.
Other benefits of the Ultium battery pack include helping the HUMMER EV earn its low center of gravity and off-road proportions as well as allowing GM to use much less cobalt than they used in previous electric vehicles, which means the battery can be built more affordably.
We’re not done talking about the different technologies & features found in the 2022 GMC HUMMER EV just yet, so be sure to check back often for even more juicy details!
