There are trucks, and then there are the 2019 GMC Sierra 2500 HD and the 2019 Ram 2500 HD. These two behemoths of the auto industry truly stand out, in more ways than one. Not only do they, quite literally, stand out because of their massive size, they also stand out in a field full of well-qualified work vehicles. But, in the head to head showdown, the 2019 GMC Sierra 2500 HD vs 2019 Ram 2500 HD, who comes out on top?
Certainly, both of these heavy-duty trucks have their merits. But if you are looking for ways to fit your work truck to your lifestyle, we at Carl Black can you help you out. Read on to find out more about some of the particulars between these two trucks, then head over to Carl Black Buick GMC in Roswell to talk to our sales staff and discover even more.
As one might expect, both of these trucks have pretty powerful engines. As they are typically used for work trucks, they need to have plenty of muscle to do all the heavy lifting you expect from it. And since they are primarily used for work trucks, there are not many engine options for either. Both trucks have two engine options – one gasoline and one diesel.
The engines on the 2019 Ram 2500 HD are a 6.4L V8 that gets a respectable 410 horsepower and 429 lb-ft of torque. That is plenty enough to tow or haul most anything related to a work site, even a heavy duty one. For those who prefer the diesel engine, as many work truck drivers do, the Ram also offers a 6.7L inline 6-cylinder diesel engine. This diesel offers 370 horsepower and 850 lb-ft of torque.
The 2019 GMC Sierra 2500 HD also has two engine options. The first is a 6.0L V8 that gets 360 horsepower and 380 lb-ft of torque. This engine, too, is plenty powerful enough to get most worksite jobs done. However, the diesel engine on the 2019 GMC Sierra 2500 HD is a 6.6L turbo diesel V8 that gets 445 horsepower and an astounding 910 lb-ft of torque. That is a significantly larger and more powerful diesel engine than the one offered by the Ram and enough to get most any job done with ease.
Many people who use trucks like the 2019 GMC Sierra 2500 HD and the 2019 Ram 2500 HD prefer the power and fuel efficiency of the diesel engine. Diesel engines typically offer more brute strength to get the big towing and hauling jobs done. That is why they are generally favored over gasoline engines for work trucks such as the Sierra 2500 and the Ram 2500. Lower models such as the 1500s are more often used for commuter or even family vehicles far more often than the 2500 classes and generally don’t need as much power. Those who are looking at a 2500, whether it is GMC or Ram or any other automaker are more likely to be looking at a new work truck that can do some hauling and towing.
Furthermore, any diesel engine will have markedly improved fuel efficiency over a gasoline engine. The cost of a diesel engine will be a little bit higher when you first purchase the truck, but you will be able to save that money at the gas/diesel station within a few years, even less if you drive more than the average work truck driver. Given the fact that the diesel engine is largely preferable for a work truck, the 2019 GMC Sierra 2500 HD is the better option of the two diesel engines.
Let’s be honest, most people who use pickup trucks as work vehicles use the cargo bed of the truck quite a bit. If they didn’t, having a truck would not be nearly as useful (or as much fun, either). The cargo bed is the defining feature of the pickup truck and is the most utile feature for most truck drivers. There are some heavy duty SUVs that can play on the work site, but they cannot do the heavy hauling that a work truck can do.
The 2019 Ram 2500 HD has a payload capacity of 4,050 pounds, slightly more than what the 2019 GMC Sierra 2500 HD can carry (3,435 pounds) . That being said, the 2019 GMC Sierra 2500 HD has a few things going for it that the Ram 2500 HD does not. First, there are two cargo bed sizes offered by each truck. The 2019 Ram 2500 HD has a 6’4” bed and an 8’ bed available. These are contingent on which configuration you get. The 2019 GMC Sierra 2500 HD has a 6’6” bed and an 8’1” bed available, again, depending on which configuration you opt for.
While these discrepancies may not seem like much, the larger beds on the 2019 GMC Sierra 2500 HD increase the overall cubic inches of hauling space. Anyone that has ever used a pickup truck for hauling can tell you that, at times, you will need every inch of space back there to get your job done as quickly and efficiently as possible.
Of course, maximum payload is not everything. At the base engines, the payload discrepancy is far worse for the 2019 Ram 2500. The base payload for the Ram 2500 is only 1,510 pounds. That is comparable to the 2019 GMC Sierra 1500. That is no typo, we do mean the Sierra 1500.
The 2019 GMC Sierra 2500, the truck that the Ram 2500 is supposed to be in competition with, has a base payload of 2,968 pounds, which is nearly double the payload offered by the Ram 2500. If all you need is 1,500 pounds of towing, you might as well save the money and get a Sierra 1500.
A truck bed is purposefully designed to be used to haul everything from heavy work materials to recreational toys. The larger and more sturdy the truck bed is, the more useful it is to you. If you are going to get a 2500 class truck, you might as well get the one that will offer you more than what a 1500 class truck will.
Most of the time, having multiple trim levels is a good thing. It allows you to fully customize your vehicle and be able to pay for certain features that you want, without having to pay for all the features you may feel are unnecessary. These trim levels allow you to move up in amenities at your discretion. This system works very well in family automobiles and commuter vehicles.
However, as we have established, trucks like the 2019 GMC Sierra 2500 HD and the 2019 Ram 2500 HD are best suited as hard-working trucks meant for job sites and hauling large quantities of materials. Since the engines are not dependent on the trim levels, and the utility of the truck is far more important than the interior, the interior and all of the fancy gadgets and touch screens should take a proverbial back seat to the rugged utility a work truck should offer.
To that end, the 2019 GMC Sierra 2500 HD has a slimmed down trim level lineup, featuring 21 configurations over 4 trim levels. Those trim levels are the Base, the SLE, the SLT and the Denali. The 2019 Ram 2500 HD, on the other hand, has 29 configurations over an unnecessary 6 trim levels.
As with any other vehicle, the further up the trim levels you go, the more interior, exterior and performance features you will receive. If you do choose to go the route of the fully decked out work truck, you will be shelling out around $65,000 for the 2019 Ram 2500 HD Limited, which is the highest trim level. The 2019 GMC Sierra 2500 HD Denali, on the other hand, can be had for less than $60,000.
