When it comes to full-size SUVs with a massive amount of interior space, for both cargo and passengers, it does not get any better than the GMC Yukon XL. This is a gorgeous beast of an SUV designed to fit as many people as possible while keeping everyone comfortable. There is a lot of competition out there, however, so it can be helpful to look at something like the 2019 GMC Yukon XL vs 2019 Ford Expedition EL or MAX.

These are both SUVs designed to give the driver as much interior room as possible, with an eye toward both general cargo and passengers. When it comes to the maximum number of passengers, however, the 2019 GMC Yukon XL takes the prize with an option for one more person comfortably and safely. This additional person is one more than can fit inside the Ford Ford Expedition EL/MAX. The features and technology inside the cabin of the Yukon also cannot be beat, especially if you look at the luxurious Denali trim level.

It is also worth pointing out that the 2019 GMC Yukon XL has a larger gas tank than the Ford Expedition MAX, which can keep you on the road longer between stops to fill up, and more leg room up front. Although both of these SUVs have impressive safety features, the Yukon offers a couple more things that push it ahead and keep it at the top of the class. For big families or large groups of friends, the passenger capacity and safety features of the Yukon just cannot be beaten.

  • Passenger and Cargo Capacity

A look at the folding seat buttons that helped push the Yukon to win the 2019 GMC Yukon XL vs 2019 Ford Expedition EL

One of the main reasons most people get into a full-size SUV, instead of something smaller, is for the tremendous amount of room it gives you inside. Sure it feels good to sit high up in one of these beasts and really take command of the road, but that interior space for friends and family, or groceries or camping supplies, is always at the top of the list. That is why the 2019 GMC Yukon XL is so advantageous when it comes to interior capacity.

One of the main reasons most people get into a full-size SUV, instead of something The standard Yukon XL SLE trim level has seating for nine people, thanks to a front-row bench seat. While that might not be as luxurious as the heated leather seats offered at higher trim levels, if you need to get yourself and eight passengers into your SUV, then the Yukon XL can do it. No matter what trim level you look at with the Ford Ford Expedition EL or MAX, you only get seating for a total of eight people – there is no option to get a ninth person safely seated inside.

One of the main reasons most people get into a full-size SUV, instead of something It is also worth noting that the 2019 GMC Yukon XL has a bit more interior storage space as well, for when you’re not worried about passengers. The total cargo space in the Yukon XL is 121.7 cu. ft. while the cargo space in the 2019 Ford Expedition EL is 121.5 cu. ft. In fairness, that is a very small margin, but more space is more space. Perhaps even more important, the Yukon XL has almost a full two inches more leg room in the front seat than the Ford Expedition – for anyone with long legs, two inches can make a huge difference.

  • Features and Technology

In order to fully appreciate what is available inside these two vehicles, consider the highest trim level of each of them. For the 2019 GMC Yukon XL that is the Denali, while the 2019 Ford Expedition EL peaks with the Platinum. It is worth noting that the Platinum starts off at a higher price than the Denali, so you would expect it to have more features, and yet that is not the case.

The 2019 GMC Yukon XL Denali includes an 8-inch Infotainment system with Navigation, a Bose 10-speaker premium sound system, and a wireless charging area. It has active noise cancellation for a quieter ride that lets you really enjoy those speakers, 12-way power adjustable driver and front passenger seats, and power-adjustable pedals. There is also an 8-inch digital driver information center and an included head-up display that provides the driver with information such as speed, navigation, and lane departure warnings right on the windshield.

By comparison, the 2019 Ford Expedition EL Platinum features an 8-inch display in the center stack with Navigation, a Bang & Olufsen sound system, and wireless charging station. There is a pair of 4-inch digital displays for driver information, but there is no option for a head-up display with the Platinum. That is a pretty major feature that lets drivers keep their eyes on the road and still see important information – and something you may expect in the more expensive Platinum model.

  • Exterior And Safety

The exterior of the 2019 GMC Yukon XL is absolutely gorgeous, but beyond just the aesthetics of this ride, there are some features that really make it stand out. For one thing, the 31-gallon fuel tank is truly massive and lets you go hundreds and hundreds of miles without the need to fill up again. Perhaps the most impressive exterior feature of the Yukon XL, however, is the rear liftgate. A hands-free power liftgate comes standard on several different trim levels, including the luxurious Denali. This lets you gesture with your foot to open the liftgate, making it ideal for accessing the rear of your vehicle while carrying something.

Although the 2019 Ford Expedition EL or MAX has a nice exterior design, there are a few ways that it is lacking when compared to the Yukon. For one thing, its gas tank only holds a bit over 27 gallons, which is quite a difference. That can have you stopping to fill up more often, especially on a long road trip. Although the Ford Expedition EL does have a hands-free power liftgate, it comes standard on the highest trim level and is available as an option at the lowest trim level, which means more money.

Although both the 2019 GMC Yukon XL and the Ford Ford Expedition MAX have great safety features, there are certain things that push the Yukon XL ahead. To really see what each of them is capable of, consider the highest trim levels for each: the Yukon XL Denali and the 2019 Ford Expedition EL Platinum.

The Yukon XL Denali includes StabiliTrack with electronic stability and traction control, multiple airbags, and automatic headlamps. The Denali comes with low-speed forward automatic braking, hill start assist, and front and rear park assist. You also get a rear cross traffic alert when backing up in the Yukon XL Denali, a forward collision alert, and lane keep assist with lane departure warning. There is a side blind zone alert, and even a teen driver system that enables and disables certain features to encourage safe driving habits for new drivers. This includes an in-vehicle report card that lets you check on how your teen driver is doing, so you can see areas that need improvement and coach them on safe driving.

The 2019 Ford Expedition EL Platinum has some good safety features, but it just falls a bit short, which is surprising considering it has a much higher starting price than the Yukon XL Denali. The Platinum has numerous airbags, configurable daytime running lamps, and AdvanceTrac with electronic stability control. A reverse sensing system, forward sensing system, and blind spot information system are included with the Ford Expedition MAX Platinum. The Platinum also includes a lane keeping system with driver alert, but there is no teen driving system. This is a major loss for anyone with a young driver, which can really impact long-term safe habits.
