How to Maximize Fuel Efficiency

Pumping Gas into VehicleWhile, naturally, fuel economy ratings are a big factor in how fuel efficient a vehicle is, they’re not the only thing. But because you have a more efficient vehicle, doesn’t mean you’ll automatically save a ton of money at the pump. You have to develop good habits and take care of your vehicle as well, as driving habits and wear and tear on your vehicle can have a very negative impact on fuel economy.

Let’s first focus on things you can do with your vehicle to maximize efficiency. For starters, if utilizing climate controls isn’t completely necessary, be sure to turn them off to improve your efficiency. If you need to cool off or heat up the vehicle, that’s fine, just make sure to wait until the engine is started to set the temperature. You should also keep your tires inflated to the recommended air pressure and, when it comes time to replace them, be sure to replace them with a new set of tires that has the same TPC Spec number in the sidewall. In addition, you should always follow your vehicle’s recommended scheduled maintenance.

Now, as for your own behavior while driving, there are plenty of things you can do to maximize fuel economy while on the road. It’s important to accelerate and brake in a smooth, gradual manner, avoiding abrupt starts and stops as much as possible. Idling your vehicle, such as while warming it up in the winter, can diminish fuel economy a great deal, so avoid this as much as possible.

Not only is utilizing cruise control more convenient, it also enhances fuel efficiency as it makes acceleration and braking much smoother. Whether you’re utilizing cruise control or not, make sure to follow speed limits as excessive speeds is not only dangerous and illegal, but less fuel efficient as well. Finally, though this one might be obvious, combine several trips into one as often as possible, as taking the same trip over and over when you could’ve done it just once is, naturally, not very efficient.
