The risks when taking your vehicle to a non GM dealer body shop

October 18th, 2012 in News

Air Bag Dangers

All companies try to cut costs. At GM, we do so to pass the savings on to you. However, less credible companies will cut costs at your expense. More frighteningly so, they will do so at the expense of your safety. On October 10th, 2012, the Obama administration issued a warning about air bags that have been replaced in the last three years. There have been a number of counterfeit airbags, which fail to inflate completely or at all, installed during this time, and we feel it is our obligation to get the word out.

While the number of affected vehicles is low (0.1 percent of the U.S. vehicle fleet), the risk for those affected is high. The National Highway Safety Traffic Administration suggests that you check to find out whether or not your vehicle is one that may have had a counterfeit airbag installed. If it is, and you’ve had your vehicle’s air bag replaced at a body shop other than the dealership, you should have your airbag checked for authenticity.

The counterfeit airbags are stamped with manufacturer logos and are made to look like their authentic counterparts. Non-authorized body shops see a low price tag and jump at the opportunity, oftentimes without considering the loss in quality that comes along with that decision. On the other hand, auto dealerships like GM buy parts directly from automakers. This eliminates the risk of counterfeit parts ever being installed on your vehicle. When your safety is on the line, there can be no compromises.

Whether it’s an airbag, brakes, or anything else that needs servicing in your vehicle, be sure to utilize the services offered at your authorized dealership. You can always trust in our genuine parts and honest labor.

Tips From the Service Lane - Fuel Savings

August 17th, 2012 in News

Fuel Savings

With gas prices as unpredictable as they’ve been lately, it’s good to have some fuel-saving tips you can rely on. In addition to driving sensibly and efficiently, here are two easy ways to improve your fuel economy.

Check your tires to ensure they are properly inflated. Every 1 psi that your vehicle’s tires are short can reduce gas mileage by 0.3 percent. When multiple tires are not inflated properly, these extra costs can really add up, especially over your weekend vacation to the lake house or daily commutes to work. By inflating your tires to your vehicle’s specifications, you can improve your gas mileage by up to 3.3 percent—that’s roughly 10 cents per gallon. In addition, properly inflated tires wear evenly, last longer, and are safer to drive on. This simple step saves you money and makes for a more enjoyable ride. When inflating, many drivers make the mistake of using the maximum pressure printed on the tire’s sidewall. Instead, look for a sticker on your vehicle’s door jamb or consult the owner’s manual to determine the correct pressure for your tires. Our technicians at Carl Black are more than happy to answer any questions you might have.

Keep your engine properly tuned. Tune ups ensure that the engine’s various components are in good shape and are working together correctly. On average, fixing an out of tune vehicle or one that has failed an emissions test can improve gas mileage by 4 percent, or approximately 14 cents per gallon. Typically, the more serious the problem, the larger the fuel economy gain will be. Fixing serious maintenance problems, such as a faulty oxygen sensor, can increase gas mileage by as much as 40 percent! Regular tune ups ensure that small, inexpensive problems don’t become large financial burdens. Simply bring your vehicle to Carl Black for a tune up, and benefit from the savings in gas mileage and peace of mind that your engine is running smoothly. Our technicians know your vehicle inside and out—we use factory parts to ensure that your vehicle’s engine is running with optimal fuel efficiency.

To help you save even more money, we’re offering $20.00 off our Tune-Up Special or Injector Clean for a limited time. Enjoy all the benefits a properly tuned vehicle has to offer today!

GMC Pickups 101: What’s in a Name?

August 17th, 2012 in News

GMC Pickup Names

When three truck builders – Randolph, Reliance and Rapid – merged to become GMC in 1912, the brand’s range of gasoline- and electric-powered trucks used model numbers between 1 and 12, each denoting payload in thousands of pounds, or how much weight could be loaded on the rear.

Today, the labels “½-ton”, “¾-ton” and “1-ton” are still used industry wide for fullsize pickup truck classes despite their having little connection to the trucks’ capabilities. For 2013, a GMC Sierra 1500 “½-ton” has a payload capacity that ranges from 1,550-1,940 pounds – considerably more than the 1,000 pounds once implied.  A “1-ton” Sierra 3500HD can haul up to 7,215 pounds; almost four times the 2,000 pounds its moniker suggests.

GMC Pickup Names

“The payload-based naming convention for pickups existed right from the beginning,” said General Motors Heritage Center Manager Greg Wallace. “The ½-ton, ¾-ton, and 1-ton models became most popular with retail customers over a few decades, not just for GMC but all manufacturers. While payload capacities have grown since, those three names stuck.”

As with payload classifications, GMC helped pioneer other naming conventions for pickups. In 1967, GMC was the first company to use 1500, 2500 and 3500 to designate its three truck models, numbers that were based off the first segment of vehicle identification numbers, or VINs, and denoted hauling capability. Those numbers remain an integral part of the GMC naming strategy and every current fullsize truck sold by an American automaker uses numbers starting with 15, 25 and 35 to denote the three classifications.

The Sierra name became standard for all GMC fullsize pickups in 1989 after being used for various upscale trim packages through the ‘70s and ‘80s. The 2013 Sierra 1500 represents the core of GMC’s truck business, while the purpose-built Sierra 2500HD and 3500HD models are some of the most-capable pickups ever produced, with class-leading maximum payload.

Sierra 1500 Ranks Highest in Segment in Initial Quality

August 17th, 2012 in News

The GMC Sierra 1500 ranks highest in the large pickup segment of the 2012 J.D. Power and Associates Initial Quality StudySM, based on results announced today.

2012 GMC Sierra

“GMC Sierra customers demand not only exceptional capability and performance, but also top quality,” said Tony DiSalle, vice president of GMC Marketing. “The fact that Sierra ranked highest in the large pickup segment in this study demonstrates that the brand is following through on its commitment to customer satisfaction.”

In May 2012, total Sierra fullsize pickup sales, including 1500 as well as ¾-ton, and 1-ton HD models, were up 23 percent year over year.

GMC Yukon was also among the leaders in the large crossovers/SUV segment. All GMC models eligible for the study improved their scores and, for the second year in a row, GMC scored above the industry average.

The 2012 IQS is based on responses from more than 74,000 purchasers and lessees of new 2012 model year vehicles surveyed at 90 days of ownership. The study includes a 228-question survey designed to provide manufacturers with information they can use to quickly identify problems and drive improvement.

Benefits of a Vehicle Detail

July 19th, 2012 in News
Vehicle Detail
After investing your money in a vehicle, you’d probably like to keep it looking like new for as long as possible. People usually don’t bat an eye about having routine maintenance performed on their vehicles, but they often consider vehicle detailing to be purely optional. Taking great care of the mechanical features of your car is wise, but it’s smart to take care of the appearance of its interior and exterior too. Periodic vehicle detail service will keep your car looking great for a long time to come, and Carl Black Buick GMC of Roswell is happy to provide this service to our valued customers.

Go Beyond Routine Car Washes

Like most car owners, you probably make a point of washing your car on a regular basis. The roads in Georgia can get mighty dusty during the hot, dry summers, and it doesn’t take long for a car to get coated in grime. As for the interior, periodically vacuuming it out and wiping it down is smart too. However, there’s only so much that a routine car wash and occasional vacuuming can do for your car. To take its care to a whole other level, you should invest in car detailing services by Carl Black Buick GMC of Roswell.

How often should You Detail Your Car?

Our customers often ask us how often they should have their GMCs and Buicks detailed. At the absolute minimum, you should have your car detailed at least once every six months. If you can’t park your car in a garage, or if it is subjected to more extreme conditions, you should have it detailed more frequently. It’s easy to dismiss the importance of having your vehicle detailed, but you’re sure to be blown away by how phenomenal it looks after you have the work done for the first time.

Vehicle Detail
Protect Your Investment

Did you know that a vehicle detail can help to protect your car’s paint job? The work that is done helps to protect a car’s paint from the elements. Day after day of being out in the beating Georgia sun can do a real number on even the finest paint job, and dust, grime and debris can affect it too. Your car will be given the royal treatment when you bring it to Carl Black Buick GMC of Roswell for a full detail, and its paint will continue to look glossy and new for a long time to come.

Save Money

Having your car detailed regularly is a very wise investment. It can actually save you money over the long run. Without regular detail services, your car could accumulate a lot of grime, dust, dirt and debris. Those things can slowly but surely chip away at the appearance and quality of your vehicle. Down the road, when you want to sell it or trade it in, you’ll get more money if it still looks shiny and new. Besides, the small amount you’ll pay to have it detailed will be worth it when you get to drive around in a gorgeous car all the time.

Take Advantage of this Great Maintenance Special

If you’re ready to have your vehicle detailed, you’re in luck. Carl Black Buick GMC of Roswell is currently offering a great maintenance special: $40 off a full vehicle detail. Just print out this offer or mention it when you make your appointment. We look forward to giving your car the royal treatment!

New Camera-Based Collision Alert

July 19th, 2012 in News

GMC Terrain

The 2012 GMC Terrain smaller SUV features the industry’s first crash avoidance system that exclusively uses a single camera to help drivers avoid front-end and unsignalled lane departure crashes.

Terrain’s new active safety system uses a high-resolution digital camera mounted on the windshield ahead of the rearview mirror that looks for shapes of vehicles and lane markings. The system uses audible warnings and a high-mounted visual display to warn the driver if he or she is following another vehicle too closely, when a collision is imminent, or when departing a lane without signaling first.

According to National Automotive Sampling System estimates, rear-end crashes account for approximately 28 percent of the nearly 6 million police-reported incidents that occur annually. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration maintains that the majority of rear-end collisions involve driver inattention, and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety says forward collision warning systems have the potential to help prevent such crashes.

“Digital image sensors are used in just about everything from cameras to mobile phones to computers and this is making them a more-affordable alternative for use in vehicles,” said Raymond Kiefer, General Motors Technical Fellow for crash avoidance systems. “By combining a digital camera with state-of-the-art image processing algorithms, we’re able to estimate when a crash may be imminent.”

Terrain’s warning display contains green “vehicle ahead” and “lanes detected” icons, as well as flashing red “forward collision alert” and amber “lane departure warning” icons that are accompanied by warning chimes. Forward collision alert operates at speeds above 25 mph and warns a driver if they are following too closely or in imminent danger of a front-end crash.  When a collision is predicted to be imminent, vehicle brakes are pre-charged to help drivers quickly reach maximum braking.

The forward collision warning software examines each frame captured by the camera – about 14 frames per second – searching for shapes characteristic of vehicles. Detected vehicles are then checked over successive frames for changes in size for calculating time-to-collision. The system also uses speed, directional change, and how the accelerator and brake pedal have been applied to determine when to alert the driver.

In order to operate in varying visibility conditions, the system combines four separate exposures to create each high-resolution image for analysis. This is particularly useful at night when short exposures are needed to get clear images of light sources while long exposures are needed to detect shapes and textures. Night time target recognition is also enhanced by looking for pairs of lights moving together that indicate taillights. The system operates as long as the camera eye is unobstructed, such as by snow or mud.

GMC Terrain

In addition to searching for other vehicles, the image processor also looks for lane markings to provide lane departure alerts. Available at speeds above 35 mph, the lane departure warning icon shines green when lane markings are detected to indicate the system is active. If the vehicle drifts out of the lane without a turn signal, the lamp switches to flashing amber and is augmented by warning beeps.

The GM camera-based forward collision alert system is listed at the website as a result of passing three track tests required by the NHTSA’s New Car Assessment Program.

“GM is committed to providing protection before, during and after a crash, but the best scenario is to avoid a collision in the first place, and this technology is designed to assist drivers for that purpose,” said Gay Kent, GM executive director of Vehicle Safety and Crashworthiness.

This dual-benefit crash avoidance system is available for $295.

Verano Quiet Tuning features

Quiet-tuning systems, processes and components are built into every facet of the Verano’s architecture. All are designed to block or absorb sound and dampen or eliminate vibrations.

  • The steel front-of-dash panel is sandwiched between two damping mats.
  • Nylon baffles are used in various hollow portions of the body structure and filled with sound-absorbing foam that expands when the body enters the paint oven.
  • The headliner comprises five layers of thermal fiber acoustic material, including a premium woven fabric on the visible outer layer.
  • Liquid applied sound deadener is robotically applied throughout the body structure to both deaden and dampen unwanted noises and vibrations.
  • Sound insulation material between rear-body structural components is made from recycled denim.
  • Triple-sealed doors that feature fiberglass “blankets” serve as water, airflow and noise barriers. The doors are also beta-braced, meaning they close with a solid, precise sound and no resonance.
  • Optimized windshield and side glass for quietness, with 5.4-mm-thick acoustic laminated windshield and 4.85-mm acoustic laminated side glass.
  • The engine’s intake and exhaust systems are tuned for quiet performance
  • Isolated brake and fuel lines prevent vibrations.

Verano powertrain

  • Ecotec 2.4L four-cylinder, with dual-overhead camshafts, variable valve timing and E85 capability is standard and is rated at 180 horsepower (134 kW) and 171 lb.-ft. of torque (232 Nm).
  • Each piston has its own directed jet that sprays oil toward its skirt, coating its underside and the cylinder wall with an additional layer of lubricant. The extra lubrication cools the pistons, reducing friction and operational noise, while also bolstering the engine’s durability.
  • Direct injection technology helps the engine produce more power with less fuel and lower emissions – including up to 25-percent reduced hydrocarbon emissions when compared with a multi-point fuel injection engine.
  • E85 is a clean-burning, domestically produced alternative fuel, composed of 85 percent ethanol alcohol and 15 percent gasoline. Ethanol is renewable, biodegradable and produces fewer greenhouse gases in the combustion process.
  • Standard six-speed automatic transmission helps the Verano deliver an EPA-estimated 32 mpg on the highway.
  • Electric power steering eliminates the conventional hydraulic engine-driven steering system, which helps save fuel and improves reliability.

Verano chassis and suspension

  • The front suspension uses decoupled MacPherson struts for better isolation, providing greater separation of extreme road conditions – large potholes, for example – from everyday driving conditions.
  • The rear suspension features a Watts Z-link design that helps center the rear axle during cornering, which helps keep the Verano’s handling responses symmetrical on both left-hand and right-hand turns.
  • The Z-link design is lighter and requires less space than a typical fully independent rear suspension, enhancing fuel economy and enabling more trunk space.
  • Steering inputs are handled by an electric power steering system, featuring a dual-pinion rack. Electric powering steering helps save fuel because it removes the conventional power steering pump from the engine’s driven accessories.
  • The steering system has a ratio of 15.5:1 and requires only slightly more than two turns, lock to lock.
  • Stopping power is handled by a four-wheel disc brake system with standard anti-lock and electronic brake force distribution, as well as StabiliTrak electronic stability control with traction control.

Verano safety and crash avoidance features

The Verano is designed to help drivers avoid crashes, while protecting the occupants in the event a crash occurs.

  • Ten standard air bags, including frontal, head curtain side air bags, front and outboard rear-seat side-impact air bags and new knee air bags. The head-curtain side air bags deploy in a rollover crash
  • Collapsible pedal system, which allows the pedals to detach during a crash to reduce the risk of leg or ankle injuries.
  • StabiliTrak electronic stability control system helps reduce the risk of rollover crashes by keeping the vehicle in the driver’s intended path by applying throttle, braking or a combination of both.
  • Power-assisted four-wheel disc brakes are standard.
  • Four-channel anti-lock braking is standard and incorporates electronic brake force distribution, which balances braking performance based on such factors as road conditions and the weight of passengers and/or cargo.
  • Pretensioners minimize forward movement during a collision, and are standard on the front safety belts. Load-limiting retractors cinch the belt more tightly.
  • LATCH (Lower Anchors and Tethers for CHildren) child seat attachment system, which is included in all second-row seating positions.
  • Tire pressure monitoring system is standard on all models.
  • Strong body structure to absorb crash energy and provide a protective “safety cage” around occupants. More than 60 percent of the body structure is composed of advanced steels.
  • Front and rear passenger headrests: The front headrests are adjustable, the two outboard rear-seat headrests are adjustable and the center-rear headrest is integrated in the seat.

OnStar details

OnStar is standard on all Verano models. It uses GPS and cellular phone technology to automatically call for help in the event of crash. OnStar subscribers also can use the service to be Good Samaritans by sending help to other motorists, and to call for help in other non-crash emergencies.

  • OnStar is the leading provider of in-vehicle safety, security and information services in the United States and Canada.
  • Six months of complimentary OnStar Directions and Connections service with Turn-by-Turn Navigation for easier route guidance on all Verano models. The feature is easy to use because all directions are sent to the car by an advisor, without the need to stop. Turn-by-Turn can be cost-effective, since map updates and aftermarket navigation systems are not needed.
  • The Advanced Crash Response System uses vehicle sensors, GPS and digital cellular phone technology to summon emergency responders to a crash scene even when the vehicle’s occupants are unable to do so.
  • Stolen Vehicle Location capability helps law enforcement officials find subscribers’ vehicle in the event they are stolen.
  • Stolen Vehicle Slowdown technology allows an OnStar advisor to remotely cut off power to the vehicle in the event of a police chase.
  • OnStar 9.0 technology offers improved voice recognition capabilities for regional phrases and dialects.

Interactive Drive Control System

The Regal GS is equipped with the Interactive Drive Control System, which adapts damping and other driving functions to drivers’ preferences. While the Regal Turbo offers Interactive Drive Control with the choice of a standard adaptive setting, a more comfortable Tour mode and a Sport mode, the system in the Regal GS is deliberately tuned for those who enjoy a higher level of performance:

  • Standard: Delivers ideal all-round performance, while maintaining comfort characteristics for everyday driving.
  • Sport: Features a firmer level of suspension damping and reduces body roll for more agility.
  • GS: Readies the car for dynamic, enthusiast-level driving. Increased steering efforts provide more direct feedback to the driver, while increased damping levels ensure ultimate wheel control and reduced body roll for ultimate agility. Only the GS mode will alter the shift feel on an automatic transmission.
