Benefits of a Vehicle Detail

July 19th, 2012 in News
Vehicle Detail
After investing your money in a vehicle, you’d probably like to keep it looking like new for as long as possible. People usually don’t bat an eye about having routine maintenance performed on their vehicles, but they often consider vehicle detailing to be purely optional. Taking great care of the mechanical features of your car is wise, but it’s smart to take care of the appearance of its interior and exterior too. Periodic vehicle detail service will keep your car looking great for a long time to come, and Carl Black Buick GMC of Roswell is happy to provide this service to our valued customers.

Go Beyond Routine Car Washes

Like most car owners, you probably make a point of washing your car on a regular basis. The roads in Georgia can get mighty dusty during the hot, dry summers, and it doesn’t take long for a car to get coated in grime. As for the interior, periodically vacuuming it out and wiping it down is smart too. However, there’s only so much that a routine car wash and occasional vacuuming can do for your car. To take its care to a whole other level, you should invest in car detailing services by Carl Black Buick GMC of Roswell.

How often should You Detail Your Car?

Our customers often ask us how often they should have their GMCs and Buicks detailed. At the absolute minimum, you should have your car detailed at least once every six months. If you can’t park your car in a garage, or if it is subjected to more extreme conditions, you should have it detailed more frequently. It’s easy to dismiss the importance of having your vehicle detailed, but you’re sure to be blown away by how phenomenal it looks after you have the work done for the first time.

Vehicle Detail
Protect Your Investment

Did you know that a vehicle detail can help to protect your car’s paint job? The work that is done helps to protect a car’s paint from the elements. Day after day of being out in the beating Georgia sun can do a real number on even the finest paint job, and dust, grime and debris can affect it too. Your car will be given the royal treatment when you bring it to Carl Black Buick GMC of Roswell for a full detail, and its paint will continue to look glossy and new for a long time to come.

Save Money

Having your car detailed regularly is a very wise investment. It can actually save you money over the long run. Without regular detail services, your car could accumulate a lot of grime, dust, dirt and debris. Those things can slowly but surely chip away at the appearance and quality of your vehicle. Down the road, when you want to sell it or trade it in, you’ll get more money if it still looks shiny and new. Besides, the small amount you’ll pay to have it detailed will be worth it when you get to drive around in a gorgeous car all the time.

Take Advantage of this Great Maintenance Special

If you’re ready to have your vehicle detailed, you’re in luck. Carl Black Buick GMC of Roswell is currently offering a great maintenance special: $40 off a full vehicle detail. Just print out this offer or mention it when you make your appointment. We look forward to giving your car the royal treatment!

2013 Buick Encore Takes the Stage

July 19th, 2012 in News

Buick Encore

Buick today introduced the all-new 2013 Encore – a luxury small crossover that delivers Buick’s signature style, interior acoustic refinement and collection of luxury amenities in a maneuverable, versatile and efficient package.

The Encore is on display at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit through Jan. 22, and goes on sale in early 2013.

“Buick Encore is a great-looking, smart choice for those who want luxury crossover amenities in a more maneuverable and agile vehicle,” said Tony DiSalle, U.S. vice president of Buick Marketing. “It represents a luxury alternative for a new audience of Buick customers, and delivers features and flexibility not typically found in vehicles of its size today.”

Buick models continue to gain in popularity, with two consecutive years of higher retail sales. The Encore joins Verano – Buick’s third all-new sedan in three years – to round out the brand’s lineup and continues the momentum established by the Enclave crossover almost five years ago.

With room for five and up to 48.4 cubic feet (1,372 liters) of storage space with the rear seat folded, the Encore offers substantial cargo capacity along with the confident, higher driving position, all-wheel-drive capability and contemporary styling of a crossover. In fact, its cargo space compares favorably against similar-sized international competitors:

Buick Encore

Additional features include 10 standard air bags and an Ecotec 1.4L turbo four-cylinder/six-speed automatic powertrain, along with standard and available technologies such as Buick’s voice-activated IntelliLink – which uses Bluetooth or a USB to connect the driver’s smartphone to a high-resolution, full-color seven-inch LCD display radio.

And because it’s a Buick, QuietTuning is standard on the Encore, which also features Buick’s first use of active noise cancellation technology.

Contemporary design offers versatile spaciousness

In keeping with the global design language that has come to symbolize the brand, the Encore’s sculpted and elegant styling traits – including sweeping character lines – make it instantly identifiable as a contemporary Buick. Signature cues include a waterfall grille, chrome accents and surrounds, portholes on the hood and painted lower panels, similar to the Enclave.

“The Encore brings Buick’s timeless, sculptural design to the crossover segment in a way that blends elegance, efficiency and utility,” said David Lyon, executive director of design. “There’s confidence in its athletic stance and elemental beauty in its rich details.”

Blue-accented projector-beam headlamps and detailed taillamps enhance the premium appearance; and 18-inch, five-spoke painted aluminum wheels are standard. Seven-spoke chrome wheels are available.

Inside, the Encore’s organic styling carries over to a flowing instrument panel that wraps naturally into the door panels. A prominent central instrument panel houses the large, full-color, seven-inch LCD display for the IntelliLink voice-activated radio system. It also features displays for the SiriusXM satellite radio, as well as available navigation and rear camera systems.

A contemporary mix of dark and light tones distinguishes the cabin, which is accented with ice blue ambient lighting, select use of bright trim and wood-grain trim. Premium seats featuring high-density foam for greater comfort on long drives are trimmed with either a contemporary cloth/leatherette motif or available leather. Heated front seats and a heated steering wheel are available. The rear seat features a fold-down armrest with cup holders.

More of the Encore’s comfort and luxury features – standard and available – include:

Buick Encore

Encore also features plenty of storage capacity and storage compartments. It offers 18.8 cubic feet (533 liters) of storage behind the split-folding rear seat and 48.4 cubic feet (1,372 liters) with the rear seat folded. With the rear seat in place, there’s room for at least six full grocery bags and with the rear seat folded, there’s room for golf clubs and overnight bags for a weekend getaway. Even the front passenger seat folds flat to extend the cargo length and accommodate long items that would not normally fit in a vehicle of this size.

Nine exterior colors and three interior color combinations will be offered.

QuietTuning gets ‘active’

QuietTuning is the process of defining Buick quality, sound and vibration characteristics and designing and refining the vehicle following a three-point strategy of reducing sounds at their source, blocking sounds from entering the cabin and absorbing any remaining sounds.

For the Encore, specific content was applied to achieve 40 sound benchmarks for refinement, including Buick’s first application of active noise cancellation. With it, ceiling-mounted microphones detect engine noise, the frequencies of which are processed by a computer that directs counteracting sound waves through the audio system’s speakers and subwoofer.

Additional standard QuietTuning features include:

‘One-tire’ philosophy sharpens ride and handling characteristics

The new Encore is built on a global small-crossover platform and engineered with a “one-tire” philosophy. Everything is optimized around a single 18-inch tire specification, designed for more precise suspension tuning, driving refinement, quietness and a feeling of control.

The Encore’s 100.6-inch (2,555 mm) wheelbase and wide stance – 60.6-inch (1,540 mm) front and rear tracks – contribute to a more confident-feeling driving experience, while a strong structure enables greater suspension precision and a quieter ride. Tuned engine, including two hydraulic mounts, are tailored to the engine’s inherent torque axis to disrupt the transmission of vibration and noise. This configuration also helps control the transfer of momentum, resulting in improved dynamic balance.

A MacPherson strut front suspension is used with coil springs, a large stabilizer bar and side-load-compensated front strut modules. The rear suspension incorporates a compound crank (torsion beam) design, with a double-wall, tubular V-shape beam profile with gas-charged twin-tube shocks. It combines all the advantages of a conventional torsion beam axle, including minimal space requirements, with low weight and consistent camber control. Urethane spring isolators are used to dampen noise.

The Encore also features a column-mounted, variable-effort electric power steering system. It contributes to a 36.7-foot (11.2 meters) turning diameter, while also saving fuel compared to an engine-driven power steering pump.

Safety technology helps protect occupants

Encore is designed with technologies – including radar-based features – to help avoid crashes and protect occupants in case one occurs. Technologies that help avoid them include:

Buick Encore

When it comes to occupant protection, the Encore’s body structure forms a protective cage around the passenger compartment. Sixty-three percent of the underbody structure is comprised of high-strength steels, while 57 percent of the upper body uses high-strength steels, including ultra-high-strength steel. That protection is complemented with 10 standard air bags, which include:

Buick Encore

Encore’s suite of safety features is rounded out with exclusive OnStar technology, which includes the Advanced Crash Response System, emergency assistance and more.

Ecotec turbo engine drives efficiency

The Buick Encore is powered by an efficient, power-dense Ecotec 1.4L turbocharged four-cylinder engine and six-speed automatic transmission. It generates an estimated 140 horsepower (103 kW) and 148 lb.-ft. of torque (200 Nm) between 1,850 rpm and 4,900 rpm. The wide rpm range for the maximum torque – a specific trait of turbocharged engines – helps it deliver a better driving experience and performance.

The 1.4L’s turbocharger is integrated within the exhaust manifold, for reduced weight and greater packaging flexibility. A reinforced crankshaft and forged connecting rods deliver additional strength to support the engine’s pressurized power and torque over a wide rpm band.

Several of the engine’s features contribute to the Encore’s overall fuel efficiency, including:

Buick Encore

They complement other vehicle-wide systems and components that also help improve efficiency, including low-rolling-resistance tires, electric power steering, neutral idle feature and optimized aerodynamics.

A Hydra-Matic 6T40 six-speed automatic transmission backs the Ecotec 1.4L turbo engine. It is part of a family of six-speed front and all-wheel drive transaxles developed for small cars and crossovers. It has a unique design, with the planetary gearsets positioned on the same axis as the engine crankshaft centerline, making the entire powertrain unit shorter fore-to-aft. This design enables a shorter overall vehicle length, increased interior space, enhanced safety crush zones and lower weight.

The Hydra-Matic 6T40 offers a “steep” first gear and a “tall” overdrive top gear to achieve a wide ratio spread of 6.14:1. This allows the Encore to achieve robust acceleration, as well as fuel efficiency and lower engine noise at highway cruising speeds. A neutral-gear disengagement feature helps enhance smoothness and efficiency.

The Buick Encore will begin arriving at U.S. Buick dealerships in the first quarter of 2013.

New Camera-Based Collision Alert

July 19th, 2012 in News

GMC Terrain

The 2012 GMC Terrain smaller SUV features the industry’s first crash avoidance system that exclusively uses a single camera to help drivers avoid front-end and unsignalled lane departure crashes.

Terrain’s new active safety system uses a high-resolution digital camera mounted on the windshield ahead of the rearview mirror that looks for shapes of vehicles and lane markings. The system uses audible warnings and a high-mounted visual display to warn the driver if he or she is following another vehicle too closely, when a collision is imminent, or when departing a lane without signaling first.

According to National Automotive Sampling System estimates, rear-end crashes account for approximately 28 percent of the nearly 6 million police-reported incidents that occur annually. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration maintains that the majority of rear-end collisions involve driver inattention, and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety says forward collision warning systems have the potential to help prevent such crashes.

“Digital image sensors are used in just about everything from cameras to mobile phones to computers and this is making them a more-affordable alternative for use in vehicles,” said Raymond Kiefer, General Motors Technical Fellow for crash avoidance systems. “By combining a digital camera with state-of-the-art image processing algorithms, we’re able to estimate when a crash may be imminent.”

Terrain’s warning display contains green “vehicle ahead” and “lanes detected” icons, as well as flashing red “forward collision alert” and amber “lane departure warning” icons that are accompanied by warning chimes. Forward collision alert operates at speeds above 25 mph and warns a driver if they are following too closely or in imminent danger of a front-end crash.  When a collision is predicted to be imminent, vehicle brakes are pre-charged to help drivers quickly reach maximum braking.

The forward collision warning software examines each frame captured by the camera – about 14 frames per second – searching for shapes characteristic of vehicles. Detected vehicles are then checked over successive frames for changes in size for calculating time-to-collision. The system also uses speed, directional change, and how the accelerator and brake pedal have been applied to determine when to alert the driver.

In order to operate in varying visibility conditions, the system combines four separate exposures to create each high-resolution image for analysis. This is particularly useful at night when short exposures are needed to get clear images of light sources while long exposures are needed to detect shapes and textures. Night time target recognition is also enhanced by looking for pairs of lights moving together that indicate taillights. The system operates as long as the camera eye is unobstructed, such as by snow or mud.

GMC Terrain

In addition to searching for other vehicles, the image processor also looks for lane markings to provide lane departure alerts. Available at speeds above 35 mph, the lane departure warning icon shines green when lane markings are detected to indicate the system is active. If the vehicle drifts out of the lane without a turn signal, the lamp switches to flashing amber and is augmented by warning beeps.

The GM camera-based forward collision alert system is listed at the website as a result of passing three track tests required by the NHTSA’s New Car Assessment Program.

“GM is committed to providing protection before, during and after a crash, but the best scenario is to avoid a collision in the first place, and this technology is designed to assist drivers for that purpose,” said Gay Kent, GM executive director of Vehicle Safety and Crashworthiness.

This dual-benefit crash avoidance system is available for $295.

Buick Verano Increases Appeal

July 19th, 2012 in News

Buick Verano

Buick introduced the Verano in 2011 to bring luxury, technology, sophistication, craftsmanship and responsive performance to the growing market for premium compact sedans. For the 2013 model year, Verano expands its appeal by offering luxury buyers a powerful, efficient 2.0L turbo four-cylinder engine option. Verano also adds advanced safety features expected in a luxury car, such as a standard rearview camera and available crash-avoidance technologies.

Verano seats up to five and is available in four models for 2013 – the generously equipped base Verano (1SD) and uplevel Convenience (1SG), Leather (1SL) and Verano Turbo (Premium 1ST group). Starting with the Convenience group, Side Blind Zone Alert and Rear Cross-Traffic Alert crash-avoidance technologies are standard on all uplevel models.

Verano Turbo will be available in the fourth quarter of 2012, and includes an Ecotec 2.0L turbocharged four-cylinder engine with standard six-speed automatic, dual exhaust, sport pedals and rear spoiler. A six-speed manual transmission is available.

At an estimated 250 horsepower (187 kW) and 260 lb.-ft. (353 Nm) of torque, the Ecotec 2.0L turbo increases the performance of an already capable, responsive luxury sedan. Effortless power from one of Ward’s 10Best Engines also makes Verano Turbo deceptively quick, with acceleration from 0-60 mph in an estimated 6.2 seconds.

Verano’s standard Ecotec 2.4L direct-injected four-cylinder engine and six-speed automatic powertrain combination also delivers refined, responsive performance. It is rated at 180 horsepower (134 kW) and accelerates from 0-60 mph in 8.6 seconds, yet still achieves an EPA-estimated 21 mpg city and 32 mpg on the highway.

Like its larger LaCrosse and Regal sedan siblings, Verano is distinguished by thoughtful design, meticulous attention to detail, sculpted Buick brand cues; advanced interior acoustics including Buick’s trademark QuietTuning; and soft-touch interior surfaces with world-class fit and finish.

Verano also provides a premium level of standard equipment for the segment – such as an available heated steering wheel – not found on the Lexus IS 250, Acura ILX or Infiniti G-Series sedan. Verano also has more passenger room than the Acura ILX and Lexus IS 250.

Buick’s easy-to-use IntelliLink radio, which debuted last year on the Verano, is now also available in combination with GPS-enabled navigation for 2013. • Supports playback of MP3 files stored on flash memory drives.

The IntelliLink screen also serves as the display for the standard rearview camera system. A premium nine-speaker Bose audio system with custom equalization and subwoofers is available and is optimized for Verano’s refined interior acoustics.

Verano powertrains

Verano is equipped with a choice of two four-cylinder engines: the standard Ecotec 2.4L and an available Ecotec 2.0L turbo.

The available Ecotec 2.0L turbo, new to the Verano for 2013, makes an estimated 250 horsepower (187 kW) and 260 lb.-ft. of torque (353 Nm). It provides on-demand power comparable to a V-6, but with the efficiency of a four-cylinder, and is tuned to deliver unique performance, efficiency and quietness. Its development applied the best practices of technical centers in Europe and North America.

Named one of Ward’s 10Best Engines in the 2012 Buick Regal GS, it has been subjected to one of the toughest, most comprehensive validation processes ever at GM, including millions of miles of real-world road testing in a broad range of climates and environments.

Verano’s standard Ecotec 2.4L with direct-injection, dual-overhead camshafts and variable valve timing provides responsive performance. Rated at 180 horsepower (134 kW) and 171 lb.-ft. of torque (232 Nm), it provides EPA-estimated highway fuel economy of 32 mpg. The engine is also E85-capable.

The Ecotec 2.4L is designed with features that reduce noise and improve its durability. Each piston has its own directed jet that sprays oil toward its skirt, coating its underside and the cylinder wall with an additional layer of lubricant. The extra lubrication cools the pistons, reducing friction and operational noise.

Fuel-saving, six-speed automatic transmissions with Driver Shift Control are standard with both engines.

The F40 six-speed manual transmission is available on the turbo-equipped Verano, and features higher torque capacity with smooth-running performance.

Verano chassis and suspension

Verano’s refined, responsive suspension system includes decoupled MacPherson struts in the front that provide greater separation of extreme road conditions – large potholes, for example – from everyday driving conditions.

A technically advanced Watts Z-link design helps center the rear axle during cornering, which helps keep the Verano’s handling responses symmetrical on both left-hand and right-hand turns. The linkage’s capability to center the axle during cornering delivers a more-balanced driving experience because the rear suspension better follows the lead of the front suspension.

The Z-link design is also lighter and requires less space than a typical fully independent rear suspension. The lower weight contributes to Verano’s fuel economy, while the compact design enables more trunk space.

Steering inputs are executed by a fuel-saving electric power steering system, featuring a dual-pinion rack.

Stopping power is handled by standard four-wheel anti-lock disc brakes with Panic Brake Assist, as well as StabiliTrak electronic stability control with traction control.

Panic Brake Assist develops additional brake pressure when an emergency braking situation is detected.

Verano also is equipped with GM’s enhanced smart pedal brake override technology, which helps prevent unintended acceleration by reducing engine power when the brake and accelerator are depressed at the same time.

Verano safety and crash-avoidance features

The Verano is equipped with numerous technologies that help drivers avoid crashes, and help protect occupants in the event a crash occurs. For 2013, Verano’s standard rearview camera helps drivers see people or objects behind the vehicle.

Verano’s strong, unitized body structure incorporates 60-percent high-strength steel in key areas to enhance strength and crash protection by helping to prevent intrusion into the passenger compartment.

Also new to Verano, Side Blind Zone Alert and Rear Cross-Traffic Alert technologies help drivers avoid collisions by using radar to watch spots the driver may not be able to see – and provide visible and audible warnings. These technologies are standard on uplevel Verano models.

Verano’s other primary safety, crash-avoidance and post-crash features include:

  • Ten standard air bags, including frontal, head curtain side air bags, front and outboard rear-seat side-impact air bags and knee air bags
  • Pretensioners minimize forward movement during a collision, and are standard on the front safety belts. Load-limiting retractors cinch the belt more tightly
  • StabiliTrak electronic stability control system helps reduce the risk of rollover crashes by keeping the vehicle in the driver’s intended path by applying throttle, braking or a combination of both
  • Collapsible pedal system, which allows the pedals to detach during a crash to reduce the risk of leg or ankle injuries
  • Four-wheel anti-lock disc brakes with Panic Brake Assist
  • GM’s enhanced smart pedal brake override feature reduces engine power when the brake and accelerator are depressed at the same time, to help reduce unintended acceleration
  • Available rear park assist
  • OnStar with Automatic Crash Response

OnStar details

Six months of OnStar Directions and Connections service is standard on Verano. OnStar is the global leading provider of connected safety, security and mobility solutions and advanced information technology.

OnStar’s RemoteLink Mobile App allows smartphone users to control vehicle functions, access vehicle information and send directions directly to the vehicle. A new, opt-in service called FamilyLink allows subscribers to stay connected to loved ones by checking the location of their vehicle online or by signing up for vehicle location alerts.

Verano will also come with new OnStar button icons. Drivers will notice an updated look for the Hands-Free Calling button, blue OnStar button and red Emergency button.
